Traveling with your card

Learn how Capital One has you covered while you travel.

You do not need to notify us of your travel. With the added security of your Capital One chip card, travel notifications are not needed inside or outside the United States.

While you're traveling, your credit card is covered for unauthorized purchases when your card is lost or stolen. Please make sure your contact information is up to date, so we can continue to send you alerts about any suspicious activity we detect.

Before you go, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Your card doesn’t require a PIN to make purchases outside of the U.S. Speak to a merchant if a terminal prompts you to enter a PIN when traveling abroad. If you’d like a Cash Advance PIN for emergencies while traveling, visit “I Want To…Get a Cash Advance PIN” after logging into your account on our website to make your request.

  • Make sure your contact information is up to date before you go, and download the Capital One mobile app on your tablet or smart device. The mobile app will help you manage your account on the go, while allowing you to do things like lock your cards and monitor your transactions. You can also customize certain transaction alert preferences to help you manage your account. Learn more about how we keep your account safe.

  • Capital One doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees.

No, You don't need to notify us about your travel plans because of the added security of your Capital One card. You can use your card abroad the same as you use it at home. Make sure you update your email and phone number in case we need to reach you.

No, there are no foreign transaction fees when making purchases outside the United States.

If you have an international phone plan, give us a call from anywhere, anytime with the country code, area code and phone number. No international phone plan? Make a collect call from a landline, and we’ll accept the charges.

If you make a transaction in a foreign currency, we automatically convert it into a U.S. dollar amount. The conversion rate in effect on the processing date may differ from the rate in effect on the transaction date that appears on your statement. We do not adjust the currency exchange rate or charge any currency conversion Fees.
