In 1958, Toyota sold a rugged off-roader called the Land Cruiser, code-named FJ40. Nearly 50 years later, the automaker revived the FJ40’s appearance and purpose, launching the FJ Cruiser in 2007. Built on a Toyota 4Runner platform and using the same V6-powered drivetrain components, the FJ Cruiser was a stylish, retro-themed two-door midsize SUV. Like its 4Runner sibling, the FJ Cruiser excelled off-road but represented compromise on the road due to a rough ride, noise, and restricted visibility. During an eight-year production run, Toyota made few changes to the FJ Cruiser. Nevertheless, to get the most technology and safety features, choose a 2011 model or newer. And if off-roading is on your agenda, consider a Off-Road package or a Trail Teams Edition of the SUV.
