Nissan's most popular model gets fresh styling and significant technology updates.

Arguably the most important model in Nissan's lineup, the Rogue compact crossover SUV is one of the bestselling vehicles in the United States and was responsible for one-third of Nissan's sales in 2023. For the 2024 model year, Nissan hopes to ensure the Rogue's continued popularity with numerous updates, including fresh styling and a vastly improved infotainment system.

Slotting into the Nissan SUV lineup between the small entry-level Kicks and midsize two-row Murano, the 2024 Rogue occupies a sweet spot as a roomy five-passenger compact crossover. Including the destination charge, prices start around $30,000 for a base S model and climb into the low $40,000s for the Platinum version.

With the 2024 Rogue, Nissan battles a long list of competitors; nearly every automaker offers at least one rival. However, the Rogue is an enjoyable and practical daily driver with good performance, a stylish interior, and impressive cargo space. The fresh styling brings the 2024 Rogue in line with the rest of Nissan's SUV lineup, and the updates to the infotainment system considerably increase its appeal.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue Takes a Step Into Luxury Territory

Changes to the 2024 Rogue include an updated V-Motion grille that extends into the slim LED daytime running lights. Broad horizontal bars create a wider-looking stance, and the revised front fascia provides a cleaner look. The taillights and rear bumper also receive updates, and several new colors are available.

Inside, the Rogue gets a more premium appearance thanks to improved materials and textures on the dashboard, door panels, and other surfaces. A new chestnut-colored premium quilted leather upholstery adds an upscale touch to the top-level Rogue Platinum. My test vehicle featured this new interior color, transforming the cabin into an entry-luxury environment.

Catering to customers purchasing the higher-level trims, Nissan adds a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard equipment on the Rogue SL and Platinum. These versions of the SUV also get a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, additional USB ports, and a wireless charging pad. The Rogue is the first U.S.-market Nissan to come exclusively with USB-C ports.

The Rogue continues to offer good comfort and utility, with impressive legroom and headroom in the rear seat and a spacious cargo area boasting 36.5 cubic-feet of storage space. Fold the back seat down, and the Rogue provides 74.1 cu-ft of cargo room.

Technology Updates Improve the 2024 Rogue

Nissan's infotainment system is showing its age, so the updated technology in the 2024 Rogue is welcome. Like many other car companies, Nissan is switching to a Google built-in system to improve its offerings, and the 2024 Rogue is the first to get it.

As the name implies, Google built-in takes advantage of the features and intuitive interface of an Android-based operating system. The popular Google Maps application serves as the Rogue's native navigation system, and Google Assistant provides an intuitive natural voice recognition interface that is one of the best in the industry. The system also allows the driver to log in with personal Google credentials, which loads Google Maps with previously saved destinations and favorites.

Additional applications, including the Spotify streaming music service and the Waze navigation system, are available for download from the Google Play Store. Downloads don't require a connected smartphone, but they need an active connected services subscription, and the Rogue includes one with five years of complimentary service. Amazon Alexa integration is also available, making it easy to remotely check the Rogue's status and start and stop the engine, all from the comfort of your living room.

Unfortunately, the Google built-in system and its advanced features are only available on the Rogue SL and Platinum trims. The Rogue S and SV come with a carry-over infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display.

Regardless of which trim level and infotainment system your 2024 Rogue has, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability comes standard. A wired connection is necessary with the S and SV trims, while the SL and Platinum offer wireless connectivity.

Out of habit, I immediately connected my Samsung Galaxy S23+ via Bluetooth when I first slid into the new Rogue Platinum. However, with the integrated Google Maps and Spotify available for download, my two most used apps were readily available within the tech, and I realized that Android Auto wasn't necessary.

The Google Assistant integration may be the best component of the Rogue's new Google built-in system — a feature that isn't part of Android Auto. Activate it using a button on the steering wheel, and Google Assistant makes setting a destination, placing a phone call, or adjusting the cabin temperature as simple as asking.

With a sudden craving for ice cream, I tested it and told the Google Assistant, "I'd like some ice cream." Within moments, a list of locations where I could get my ice cream fix appeared on the display.

The 2024 Rogue Is Quiet and Composed on the Road

Nissan provided me with a 2024 Rogue Platinum to evaluate in southeast Michigan. Equipped with all-wheel drive, the Platinum Premium Package, and two-tone paint, my test vehicle's manufacturer's suggested retail price was $43,805, including a $1,390 destination charge.

All Rogues have a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that delivers 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. Nissan's Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is not as responsive as I would have liked, but it didn't detract much from the overall driving experience.

The Rogue has good power for its size and smoothly accelerates to highway speeds with little effort. When cruising at 70 mph, the Rogue's ride remains quiet and composed with no road noise, even when traveling the inevitable rough patches on Interstate Highway 94 outside Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Rogue Platinum comes standard with ProPilot Assist with Navi-Link, a hands-on, semi-autonomous driver-assistance system that combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist. It performed well and, because it incorporates data from the navigation system, automatically slowed the Rogue when approaching curves deemed too tight for the programmed speed.

Taking the Rogue out on some of my favorite back roads, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this compact SUV handled the winding pavement. The Rogue is enjoyable to drive, with responsive steering, capable brakes, and confidence-inspiring ride and handling dynamics.

In addition, it is relatively fuel efficient. My test vehicle's EPA ratings were 28/34/31 mpg in city/highway/combined driving. During my evaluation, the trip computer showed that I got 29 mpg, a rather impressive figure for a compact crossover with AWD.

The Nissan Rogue Remains Competitive

Competing in one of the most hotly contested vehicle segments in the U.S., the Rogue faces rivals that are among the top-selling vehicles this year. However, the updates to the 2024 Rogue should help ensure its continued success against competitors that include the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4.

While revised exterior styling and interior updates give the Rogue a fresh look, the introduction of the Google built-in infotainment system represents the crossover's most significant improvement for the new model year. Unfortunately, you must buy one of the more expensive trims for this game-changing upgrade.
