A small crossover utility vehicle (CUV) favored for its capability and versatility, the Subaru Crosstrek is essentially a lifted Subaru Impreza hatchback with a rugged design and plenty of ground clearance. The Crosstrek debuted more than a decade ago and, in 2022, was Subaru's best-selling model. Now, the redesigned 2024 Subaru Crosstrek arrives as a third-generation version of the CUV.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Changes
For the 2024 model year, Subaru introduces a redesigned Crosstrek with familiar styling and the same engines. However, the new Crosstrek offers more technology, added safety, and improved driving dynamics. Highlights include a larger available touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity, standard EyeSight safety systems (because Subaru has dropped the manual transmission), and improvements in ride comfort, handling, and interior quietness. The 2024 Crosstrek trim levels include Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited.

Although new in many ways, the 2024 Crosstrek uses the same powertrains as before. Base and Premium trims feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. Higher-level Sport and Limited trims receive a 2.5-liter four-cylinder generating 182 horsepower and now 178 lb-ft of torque, 2 more than the 2023 model. In addition, a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters is standard.

As I write this article, official 2024 Crosstrek gas mileage ratings are unavailable. The EPA will finalize them closer to the crossover's on-sale date. However, considering that the new Crosstrek uses the same engines as the previous-generation model, one could estimate that the redesigned CUV will get about 30 mpg in combined driving, regardless of engine choice.

Subaru is notable for equipping nearly its entire model lineup with standard all-wheel drive. (The BRZ sports car is the lone holdout.) With the new 2024 Crosstrek, Subaru modifies its AWD system to enhance responsiveness and improve handling and vehicle control when traveling on- or off-road.

What Is Subaru X-Mode?
The 2024 Crosstrek comes with hill-start assist, available hill-descent control, and X-Mode technology to further enhance its off-roading capability. Meanwhile, Crosstrek Sport and Limited trims receive a dual-function X-Mode with an added Deep Snow/Mud setting for improved capability.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Ground Clearance
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek continues to boast 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which is better than nearly all of its rivals. Not only that, but the Crosstrek has more standard clearance than many SUVs known for their legendary off-roading capabilities, such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee (8.4 inches).

Subaru says the new Crosstrek's cabin is quieter and more comfortable than the outgoing model's. For 2024, new front seats feature sculpting for added support to minimize fatigue. Subaru also reduced specific interior sound frequencies to make the cabin quieter. Cloth seats are standard with Base, Premium, and Sport trim. Limited models upgrade to perforated leather with contrast stitching.

Dual 7-inch touchscreen displays are standard in the base Crosstrek. Starting with Premium trim, an 11.6-inch touchscreen is standard. Both setups include Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity (wireless with the bigger display). Voice-activated navigation and a Harman Kardon premium sound system are also available.

The latest version of Subaru's EyeSight driving assistance and collision avoidance technology is standard on all 2024 Crosstreks. It features faster processing times and improved cameras with a wider field of view to better identify vehicles, pedestrians, and obstructions. In addition, a new electric brake booster makes the adaptive cruise control system smoother when operating.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Cargo Space
The new Crosstrek is all about functionality. Fixed cross-bar mounting points are standard, and all but the base model come equipped with raised roof rails. However, the cargo area is smaller than before, offering 19.9 cubic feet of space behind the 60/40-split rear seats and 54.7 cu-ft with them folded down. Loading and unloading are relatively easy, though, thanks to the Crosstrek's wide cargo area opening and low liftover height.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Price and Release Date
The new 2024 Crosstrek's pricing is the same as the outgoing model's, and ranges from about $25,000 to around $31,000, excluding the destination fee. For the first time, Subaru will build some versions of the Crosstrek in the United States. Models with the 2.5-liter engine will hail from Subaru's Indiana factory, while those equipped with the 2.0-liter engine will come from an assembly plant in Japan. Subaru expects a release date of late spring 2023.
