QuickTakes:

In production for more than 60 years, Toyota discontinued its fabled Land Cruiser after the 2021 model year. This was a North American directive, however, as the iconic 4x4 continued to be sold in numerous global markets. After a short hiatus, the Toyota Land Cruiser is back. The all-new model is outfitted with modern-day technologies while paying homage to its legendary off-road heritage.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Gets a New Platform

For 2024, every Land Cruiser model will have full-time four-wheel drive. Standard options include a center locking differential, a two-speed transfer case, and a Crawl Control system — which is basically cruise control for low-speed off-highway trail driving. Riding on a brand-new body-on-frame platform — one shared with the redesigned Lexus GX — the updated off-roader is more rigid and capable of withstanding extreme driving conditions.

This go-anywhere attitude doesn't mean a rough and tumble ride. The 2024 Land Cruiser features a new double-wishbone front suspension paired with a multilink rear suspension. Larger standard 17-inch front and rear disc brakes provide confident stopping power regardless of the terrain. A new disconnect system for the front stabilizer bar is available on higher trims.

A Slimmer Profile for the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

Following in the footsteps of the original, the new Land Cruiser is boxier and smaller than the 200 Series, the previous model sold in the U.S. The 2024 Land Cruiser is 1.2 inches shorter and 4.4 inches slimmer. Ground clearance is slightly less, too, measuring 8.7 inches — a 0.2-inch drop compared with the 200 Series. Off-road capabilities remain commendable thanks to a 31.0-degree approach angle, 22.0-degree departure angle, and a 25.0-degree breakover angle. As of publication, Toyota has not provided additional Land Cruiser specifications, including interior dimensions or cargo space.

The V8 Disappears From the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

Consider it a sign of the times, but the Land Cruiser V8 is no more. A new hybrid powertrain is the lone source of propulsion for 2024, replacing the 5.7-liter V8 of the previous model. As a hybrid, the Land Cruiser features a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor making 48 horsepower. The combined output is 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Although it generates 55 horsepower less than the 200 Series, the new Land Cruiser hybrid ups the torque by 64 lb-ft. The standard Land Cruiser transmission is an eight-speed automatic.

Fuel Economy for the 2024 Land Cruiser Not Yet Announced

According to Toyota, Land Cruiser gas mileage for 2024 will be announced closer to the vehicle's on-sale date. Now equipped as a hybrid, the Land Cruiser's miles per gallon should improve compared with the V8-powered 200 Series fuel economy estimates, which was rated by the EPA at 13/17/14 mpg city/highway/combined.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Towing Capacity Decreases

The new Land Cruiser will have a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds. This a notable drop from the previous 200 Series, which had a maximum tow rating of up to 8,100 pounds. A trailer hitch and front tow/recovery hooks will be standard equipment.

Available colors include Black, Heritage Blue, Ice Cap, Meteor, Trail Dust, Underground, and Wind Chill Pearl. The new Land Cruiser will seat up to five occupants. Strictly a two-row SUV this time around, the base Land Cruiser will feature keyless entry, push-button start, a heated steering wheel, and black fabric seats. There are side knee pads and a palm rest near the center display for added comfort.

An 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard, along with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless smartphone charging, and front and rear USB-C charging ports. Higher trim levels receive heated and ventilated seats, a premium audio system, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and access to a Wi-Fi hot spot.
