Glad I waited for the Ioniq Plug in Hybrid
Monday, February 05, 2018
VW bought back my TDI 6 months ago and I was looking to replace it. I looked at every high MPG car on the market including the Teslas. Glad I waited for the Ioniq Plug in Hybrid. Bought the Ioniq Plug In Hybrid Limited with the Ultimate package last week one of the first ones to arrive in the US. Have put 2400 miles on it already. Car is getting 55MPG actual mileage from personal fuel logs. (sicker says 52) What a pleasure to drive. Honestly one of the best deals on the market. I love the option to go all electric. Hyundai says 29 miles on a fuel charge. When driving on battery power Im getting closer to 40 miles all electric. I was a little worried about performance since I live in the Rocky Mountains but it climbs steep grades with ease. Drove to Anaheim CA and back last weekend. Hotel I stayed at had a level 2 charger. Charged up the car overnight. Drove to downtown Los Angeles Saturday morning and found a ChargePoint station with front row parking to plug into while we went shopping came back to fully charged car. Drove back to Anaheim without using a drop of gas for the trip there and back. Car has a learning curve. So many features Im starting to figure out the best way to drive for different conditions. Having a blast doing it.

It's growing on us but fuel economy not as stated.

The styling is growing on us, tastefully normal, doesn't look like a Prius. Interior is hard plasticky and it's easy to scratch especially on the lower part of the doors when you exit the vehicle. In general the cabin materials feel and look cheap. The ride is actually pretty darn good, sporty even, handles like a cat on shag. Our SEL version is well equipped but the quality of the sound system is poor. The ride is pretty quiet, no rattles or shakes with minimum road noise....impressive. If you drive with a hypermiling mindset the car will deliver exceptional mileage of around 58-60 (car computer) granted you aren't in stop and go traffic or on the expressway. My real beef with the car is that the computer is VERY optimistic, when doing our own calculations the old fashioned way the car averages a solid 5mpg LESS. If you drive without thinking and being proactive about fuel economy the car quickly dips to 40-45 mpg. Our computer readout shows we have only driven aggressively for 2% of our total mileage so we are not dogging it. We have a 3500 mile round trip coming up, i'll report back with how it does. Right now we are pleased but not totally sold on this hybrid.

Surprisingly excellent=very smooth & great mileage
Monday, January 25, 2021
So far, so great! Amazingly well-finished & loaded with all the conveniences of cars costing 2x as much & getting half our mileage(!) Acceleration is quite good when put it into Fast mode. Excellent Michelin's grip great & are quiet. Rear view is rather obstructed by double spoiler, but backup cameras make up for that in tight spaces & driveways. Really pleased with it 1.5 years into ownership.
