To create the Volvo XC70, the automaker took a V70 station wagon, installed all-wheel drive, raised the suspension, and added rugged-looking SUV styling cues. The model went on sale in the U.S. market in 2003 and received a redesign in 2008. The second-generation XC70 came in a single level of specification, equipped with a standard all-wheel drive system that could send up to 65 percent of the six-cylinder engine’s power to the rear wheels for added traction. In addition, the XC70 could hold up to 71 cubic feet of cargo. Volvo steadily improved the XC70 over time. An available turbocharged six-cylinder debuted in 2009, and in 2011 a front-wheel drive version of the XC70 became available. Volvo freshened the model with updated styling, new technology, and a fold-flat front passenger seat in 2014. In 2015 and 2016, Volvo installed more efficient engines. The Volvo V90 Cross Country replaced the XC70 in 2017.
