Review QuickTakes

Jeep positions the 2022 Cherokee as a midsize, five-passenger SUV. However, due to a narrow cabin and stingy cargo space that expands from 24.6 cubic feet to 54.7 cu-ft, it resides on the smaller end of that segment. If you’re planning to go off-roading, you’re going to want the Cherokee X or Cherokee Trailhawk because the Cherokee Latitude Lux and Cherokee Limited models are traditional crossovers designed mainly for driving on pavement.

What’s New for the 2022 Jeep Cherokee?

For 2022, Jeep reconfigures the Cherokee lineup, eliminating more than half of the previously available trim levels, dropping the old 2.4-liter four-cylinder base engine in favor of a powerful V6, and making an all-wheel drive system (AWD) standard on nearly every remaining model. Jeep also adds more standard equipment, including an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

As a result of these changes, there are just four versions of the SUV from which to choose, including the new 2022 Jeep Cherokee X, which serves as the entry-level model, along with the Latitude Lux. In addition, the base price of a 2022 Jeep Cherokee jumps by nearly $6,000, giving the smaller Jeep Compass some breathing room in the automaker’s SUV lineup without encroaching upon Jeep Grand Cherokee territory.

How Much is a Jeep Cherokee?

This year, 2022 Cherokee prices range from the mid $30,000s to the low $40,000s, including the destination charge to ship the SUV from the Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant that builds it to your local dealership.

2022 Jeep Cherokee Trim Levels and Configurations

At the start of the model year, the 2022 Cherokee comes in four trim levels. However, special-edition versions could arrive later in the year to further expand the lineup. Highlights from the standard equipment lists include:

Jeep Cherokee X – New for 2022, the Cherokee X blends value with off-roading capability. It features a standard V6 engine, all-wheel drive, and 17-inch black alloy wheels wearing all-terrain tires. In addition, Jeep raises the off-road suspension by an inch for extra ground clearance and gives the Cherokee X a blacked-out exterior appearance.

The Cherokee X is ready for foul weather. It comes with rain-sensing wipers, a wiper de-icer system, remote engine starting, heated side mirrors, a heated steering wheel, and heated front seats. An eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat is standard, while front passengers benefit from a manually height-adjustable seat. The Cherokee X also has simulated leather upholstery with cloth seat inserts, air conditioning, and all-season floor mats.

An 8.4-inch touchscreen Uconnect infotainment system is standard, and it includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and a connected services package, including access to a Wi-Fi hotspot. Driver assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Jeep Cherokee Latitude Lux – The Cherokee Latitude Lux is priced the same as the Cherokee X but has a different mission. It has standard front-wheel drive (AWD is optional) and suspension tuning for driving on pavement. In addition, it features 17-inch satin-finish alloy wheels with all-season tires, a mix of body color and chrome exterior trim, and a power rear liftgate. Inside, this version of the Cherokee has ambient interior lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium leather upholstery, and a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat.

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk – The Cherokee Trailhawk builds on Cherokee X equipment with revised front styling to improve the SUV’s approach angle, a different 17-inch alloy wheel design, a more robust Active Drive II AWD system with a locking rear axle, a Selec-Terrain traction management system, and improved powertrain cooling systems. Red tow hooks, a black glare-reducing hood decal, and skid plates complete the Trailhawk’s transformation into a “Trail Rated” Jeep.

Additionally, the Trailhawk model adds an upgraded instrumentation display and dual-zone automatic climate control inside.

Jeep Cherokee Limited – If you want a luxurious Cherokee, choose the Limited. It is based on the Latitude Lux and adds standard AWD, 18-inch polished alloy wheels, automatic high-beam headlights, a panoramic sunroof, a premium sound system, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors with automatic braking, and a semi-autonomous parking assistance system.

Is the 2022 Jeep Cherokee a Good SUV?

Jeep has raised prices on the 2022 Cherokee, but the SUV appears to offer better value thanks to a substantial bump in power, standard AWD on most models, and added equipment across the board. Jeep also provides complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years, and if you don’t need the V6 engine’s 4,500-pound maximum tow rating, you can opt for a more efficient turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Crash-test ratings are favorable, too. The main downside to Jeep Cherokee ownership is an interior smaller than what you’ll find in its intended rivals.

Jeep Cherokee Competitors for 2022

Jeep might call the Cherokee a midsize SUV, but in reality, it’s what is known as a ‘tweener. That is because it competes against the larger compacts and the smaller midsize two-row SUVs on the market. As such, it battles the Buick Envision, Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester and Outback, Toyota RAV4, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

My first word was “car.” That’s what I’m told, anyway. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with them. The design. The engineering. The performance. And the purpose. I’m a car enthusiast who loves to drive, but I’m also most interested in the cars, trucks, and SUVs that people actually buy. Anybody can tell you that a sports car is fast. What you need to know is whether or not you should buy that new SUV, and why. My life purpose is to help you make that decision.
