FICO FAQs

General

We’re updating the credit scoring version you see on CreditWise. Once you’re updated, you’ll see your FICO® Score 8 instead of your VantageScore® 3.0 credit score. As a result, the score you see may change.

FICO® Score 8 uses a different method of calculating your score than VantageScore® 3.0. Your TransUnion® credit report is still the source from which your score is formulated.

FICO® Score 8 is a credit scoring version developed by FICO. This score should give you a good sense of your overall credit health, but it may not be the same score used by all of your creditors.

Like VantageScore® 3.0, FICO® Score 8 rates credit scores between 300 and 850. You can still assume that the higher the score, the more trustworthy you appear to lenders.

You should expect to see your FICO® Score 8 in place of where your VantageScore® 3.0 was before. We’ve also made updates to certain features, like the CreditWise Credit Simulator. Your credit report is still from TransUnion®.

Do note that you may notice some minor changes to the CreditWise Terms and Conditions as part of the FICO® Score 8 update. Log in to see the version of the Terms and Conditions that applies to your account. Your continued use of CreditWise represents your agreement to the updated Terms and Conditions.

Score

The FICO® Score 8 provided by CreditWise is calculated using the data on your TransUnion credit report. FICO® Score 8 is based on several score ingredients:

  • Payment history
  • Length of credit history
  • Amount of new credit
  • Amount of debt
  • Credit mix

FICO® Score 8 uses a different scoring method than VantageScore® 3.0. There’s no need to worry, your overall creditworthiness is not directly affected by CreditWise switching from VantageScore® 3.0 to FICO® Score 8.

Both VantageScore® 3.0 and FICO® Score 8 provide scores between 300 and 850. However, their scoring versions—and how they label your credit score—differ. For example, a 765 credit score is labeled as “Excellent” under VantageScore® 3.0 and “Very Good” under FICO® Score 8.

90% of top lenders in the US use FICO® Scores1. Keep in mind that lenders may use a different FICO® Score than what you see in CreditWise—like FICO® Score 4 or FICO® Score 9—when assessing your creditworthiness. And, some may not use FICO® Scores at all.

Regardless of what score lenders use, the FICO® Score 8 listed in CreditWise gives you a good idea of your overall credit health.

Credit

Your overall creditworthiness is not directly affected by CreditWise switching from VantageScore® 3.0 to FICO® Score 8. However, it may have changed due to other credit factors—like the consistency of your on-time payments or the amount of available credit you currently have.

FICO® Score 8 and VantageScore® 3.0 use different formulas when calculating your score. Some users may see a higher score, some may see a lower score and some scores may not change at all. Remember, your overall creditworthiness is not directly affected by CreditWise switching from VantageScore® 3.0 to FICO® Score 8. And, the underlying data used to formulate your score is still from your TransUnion®  credit report.

Nope! Everything is still based on your TransUnion® credit report.
