What is a 1098/1099 form?

IRS Forms 1098 or 1099, also known as "information returns," are documents that identify certain types of financial transactions to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Financial institutions are required to report these types of transactions by filing these forms with the IRS and providing copies to qualifying taxpayers.

When can I expect to receive my 1098/1099 form?

Capital One provides these forms to qualifying individuals according to the timelines established by the IRS. Most form types will be mailed by January 31st. If you have elected to receive statements electronically, your form(s) will be available online by January 31st. Please refer to the official IRS website (noted below) for additional information on when you typically can expect to receive an IRS Form 1098 or 1099.

How can I get a copy of my 1098/1099 form?

If you have misplaced or need an additional copy of your form for the current or prior tax year, give us a call at 1-800-655-BANK (2265) and an associate will be able to help process your request.  We can mail forms starting on the first business day in February.  Please be aware that it may take 7-10 business days for your form(s) to arrive by 1st class mail. If you elected to receive statements electronically, you can retrieve your form in the Capital One online portal.

What can I do if I have questions about the content of my form?

You may contact us by calling the telephone number listed on the upper right side of your tax form. Please have the following information readily available:

 

  • Your name

  • Your account number, if one is listed on the form

  • Your Social Security Number or other IRS-issued Tax Identification Number as printed on the form
