Snowflake Summit 2024: Capital One Software highlights
Over 20,000 people gathered in San Francisco to learn about the latest in data and AI from Snowflake and its partners at Snowflake Summit 2024. As a long time Snowflake partner, Capital One Software was back for its third year sharing how Capital One Slingshot can make data management easier for Snowflake customers by taking the guesswork out of optimizing their AI Data Cloud.
Showcasing Capital One Slingshot for Snowflake optimization
Cost optimization was on a lot of minds this year, which drove many great conversations in our booth. We demoed Slingshot’s new cost breakdown report which, paired with Slingshot’s custom tagging, creates a customizable view that breaks down a customer’s Snowflake bill based on their organization’s needs, without manually tracking each department or user.
Another top pain point we heard was optimizing warehouses; knowing what to optimize and how big of an impact it would make. Attendees showed great interest in how Slingshot’s enhanced warehouse recommendations minimizes guesswork and enables customers to optimize their Snowflake spend and performance by identifying, alerting and remediating warehouse issues.
If you weren’t able to attend the event this year or missed us at our booth, watch our on-demand demo webinar! Rahul Mode, Sr. Director, Solutions Architecture, explains how Slingshot helps businesses optimize costs, reduce inefficiencies and accelerate time-to-value of Snowflake.
The theme of this year’s Summit centered on the limitless possibilities of data and how Slingshot continues to empower teams to harness the power of their data and maximize their Snowflake investment. Our team also shared our own experience adopting Snowflake for real-time data analysis at scale and what we’ve learned through that journey. If you’re interested in reading the best practices our experts shared, check out recaps of their talks below.
Best practices shared by Capital One experts
How to deploy CI/CD for Snowflake
CI/CD has matured dramatically over the past few years, enabling software engineers to deploy software updates to end users without disruption. Despite this progress, deploying CI/CD in databases remains complex and challenging. In this talk, we discussed the challenges Capital One Software faced when deploying CI/CD in Snowflake, and showed how we used open source libraries and various Snowflake features to implement a CI/CD solution to improve the developer experience and reduce manual errors.
Using Iceberg Tables to implement a lakehouse architecture
Previously, processing data with Snowflake required ingesting data, and thus duplicating it into Snowflake's native table format. Snowflake Iceberg Tables enable companies to store all data in a lakehouse architecture with consumption pointed to it. With this model, companies can load and store data cost-effectively as well as streamline data governance. In this talk, we shared how Capital One leveraged Iceberg Tables to move Snowflake consumption to a lakehouse, along with best practices for other companies looking to do the same.
Optimizing queries for cost savings and better performance
Many users will compose complex queries as their organization scales Snowflake, but these queries are not always optimized for cost and performance. Having adopted Snowflake in 2017, Capital One has years of experience optimizing its own queries—at scale, across business teams—to both reduce cost and improve performance. In this talk, we tapped into this experience to share tips and tricks for users looking to optimize queries based on various use cases.
FinOps tips to ensure valuable data spend
Many companies will apply the concept of FinOps to ensure cloud spend is valuable to the business. As compute spend increases due to AI, companies also need to be thoughtful about their data spend. In this talk, we discussed how a FinOps strategy can be applied to data infrastructure, bringing together technology, finance and business teams in a shared accountability model. We shared how this comes to life to ensure data spend is valuable to the business, and we'll offer tips to help companies do the same.
How Capital One innovates using “You Build, Your Data”
At Capital One, our enterprise data platforms enable associates to produce and consume data through self-service. In this talk, we presented how our "you build, your data" approach helps associates innovate by using data at their own pace, including sharing best practices companies can consider to build their own data platforms.
Solving data management challenges at scale
We always have an incredible time at Snowflake Summit and were excited to share the latest features and updates for Slingshot—born out of our own journey to solve data management challenges at scale.
