The new Capital One Hub will advance data science at UVA and beyond.
The University of Virginia's School of Data Science announced today the official opening of its new building, which includes the Capital One Hub. The Capital One Hub, funded by a $2 million gift from Capital One, is a central collaborative space that will host presentations and events. It will serve as a gathering place for students, faculty, and other leaders in the data science community to come together, share ideas, make discoveries, and learn from each other.
The new home of the School of Data Science is located at the east entrance of the Emmet-Ivy corridor, a UVA expansion project that will also include a building for the Karsh Institute of Democracy, a hotel, a conference center, and a proposed performing and visual arts center.
Capital One has a longstanding relationship with UVA and the School of Data Science to foster innovation and the next generation of technology leaders. With today’s opening of the new School of Data Science building, including the Capital One Hub, we are thrilled to deepen our partnership to further discovery, share knowledge, and make a positive impact on society through collaborative, open, and responsible data science research and education.
The school's new building signifies a fresh start for the nation's first school devoted to data science and an expansion of UVA's partnership with Capital One. Capital One's support extends beyond the Hub, with a rich history of sponsoring student programs, faculty research awards, and serving on UVA's board.
The opening celebrations for the new building occurred on April 26 and featured a digital ribbon-cutting ceremony and a community event. Speakers at the event included Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, UVA President Jim Ryan, Founding Dean of the School of Data Science Phil Bourne, and Natarajan, among others.
