Article QuickTakes:

There’s seating for five in both the 2023 BMW X1 and the 2023 Honda CR-V, but that’s where the similarities end. The X1 is a luxury vehicle available in a single trim with rich interior materials and a powerful engine. The Honda CR-V is a more affordable option with a wider range of trims that doesn’t offer the same level of performance, but does have a hybrid engine for better fuel efficiency.

2023 BMW X1 vs. 2023 Honda CR-V: Price

The X1 is available in a single trim priced around $39,000. It includes standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and a 241-hp, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Honda CR-V is available in four trims. The base EX and the EX-L have a 190-hp turbocharged four-cylinder linked to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Those are the only two gas options. The Sport and Sport Touring are available only as hybrids, with a four-cylinder engine and two hybrid motors for a combined 204 hp. Pricing for 2023 has yet to be released, but with pricing for the 2022 Honda CR-V EX starting at around $30,000, any increase will likely still keep it well below the X1.

2023 BMW X1 vs. 2023 Honda CR-V: Interior

The X1 grows larger this year, with a wheelbase of 106 inches. The Honda CR-V also gets larger, with a wheelbase of 106.3 inches. Cargo room, however, is quite different between the two, with the X1 offering 25.7 cu. ft and the CR-V coming in with up to 39.3 cu. ft with its adjustable load floor.

Standard equipment on the X1 includes dual-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather seats, and ambient lighting. There’s a curved display screen with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen along with embedded navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Honda CR-V has a digital instrument cluster and a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen standard, with its largest available screen size coming in at only 9 inches. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is cloth seating. It’s a well-equipped vehicle, but in keeping with its lower price point, the CR-V doesn’t have the level of luxury or features of the X1.

2023 BMW X1 vs. 2023 Honda CR-V: Fuel Economy

The X1 has a 241-hp, 2.0-L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with standard AWD. It gets fuel economy ratings of 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

Fuel economy figures for the 2023 Honda CR-V are yet to be released. The slight engine modifications this year are likely to change figures from the previous model year. Even without those figures, the CR-V is likely a more fuel-efficient option thanks to its available hybrid powertrain.

I write about cars. A lot. That's because I’ve always loved cars and the fact that they regularly hand me the keys to shiny new automobiles so I can write about them is a constant source of amazement. I cover breaking news, write reviews, and attend auto shows and new vehicle launches across the country. The more winding the road and the more unknown the route, the better.
