Jeep recently expanded its lineup, adding, among other things, two full-size SUVs under the Wagoneer sub-brand. Its Escalade ESV fighter, dubbed the Grand Wagoneer L, closely benchmarks the Caddy. For instance, between bumpers, it stretches only a few tenths longer than the ESV, though the two carve out the cabin differently, with the Cadillac offering more room overall. Here, we look at a few other areas where the two differ.

Shoppers will need around $85,000 to take the Escalade ESV home. All models but one come with two-wheel drive and a 420-hp 6.2-liter V8, though you can option a 277-hp 3.0-liter turbo-diesel for around $1,600 and four-wheel drive for about $3,000. As to the exception, that would be the lineup-topping, performance-focused, four-wheel-drive-only Escalade-V ESV. It opens at about $155,000, and its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 makes a wholly unnecessary 682 ponies, but then, excess is generally part and parcel of this ute's appeal.

Jeep, meanwhile, offers only one powertrain in the long-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer: its Hurricane 510-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, paired with four-wheel drive. The lineup opens around $95,000. That's some 10 grand more than a starter ESV, but Jeep packs the L with content.

In addition to its more powerful engine, the base Grand Wagoneer L provides a few more amenities than the entry Escalade ESV, including a ride-smoothing air suspension, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and leather-trimmed seats — the front row of which comes with a massage function.

The Caddy's more elaborate technology setup consists of three OLED (organic light-emitting diode, tech often seen in modern televisions and other digital screens) displays: a 7.2-inch control panel, a 14.2-inch instrument cluster, and a 16.9-inch infotainment display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality is included.

The Grand Wagoneer L's arrangement — a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.0-inch center screen — is more standard in appearance. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available.

Both vehicles are capable in terms of towing, but the Jeep is the stronger of the two, boasting tow capability of about 10,000 pounds. The 6.2-liter-equipped ESV can pull between roughly 7,000 and 8,000 pounds off its hitch, depending on the driveline and whether you spec a trailering package.

Owners of the Grand Wagoneer L should expect to see 16 mpg from their full-sizer in combined city and highway driving. The same goes for Escalade ESV buyers on the highway; combined city and highway driving, however, is 13 mpg.
