QuickTakes:

There are better ways to find a parking space than circling the block and hoping someone will leave: Parkopedia is one of them. It's a website and app — sometimes available in your car's infotainment system — that can guide you to an open spot.

Parkopedia Takes Some of the Stress Out of Parking

Founded in 2007, Parkopedia is a free service that helps users search for and sometimes reserve available parking spaces near their destination. The goal is to make trips to crowded locales less frustrating for everyone.

It will show you pertinent information such as pricing, lot entry locations, hours of operation, and number of spaces for millions of garages in 20,000 cities across the globe, and it offers real-time space monitoring in 4,000 of them. That means you can see how many spots are open in a particular lot at any given time.

A Simple Search Brings Up Key Information

Users can conduct a parking search ahead of time or while in transit through the mobile or in-vehicle app. Just type in your final destination and let Parkopedia do its thing. It should populate a list of nearby lots — and sometimes specific open spots — that you can sort by distance, price, rating, and more. You can also tailor your search so that it brings up EV-charging locations or accessible spaces.

Once you've made your selection, Parkopedia will lead you to it with step-by-step directions. If the garage has space monitoring, the app may also be able to pick out the best spot for you — the one that's closest to the best exit for your final destination.

Certain parking areas allow Parkopedia users to claim a specific spot in advance and sometimes even pre-pay for it. In those cases, you'll need to create and/or log in to an account and follow the prompts to book a reservation. Once that's done, you can find the details and the garage-access QR code in the mobile app. When you reach the lot, hold the code under the ticket scanner and the gate should open for you.

Users Can Compare Lot Prices Before Parking

Parkopedia allows users to sort parking options by their hourly rates so you don't end up going into the first lot you find and paying more than you need to. Along with that, the app can tell you useful garage info such as height clearances, minimum and maximum fees, and even the best walking route out of the lot.

You don't need to sign up for an account, but those who do can save parking spaces to a favorites list as well as reserve and pay for spots in supported lots with the mobile or in-vehicle app.

The company has partnered with major automotive brands such as Audi, BMW, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and Volkswagen, and you can often find it built into the infotainment systems of those automakers' models.
